Case Study 3 - Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
Short DescriptionThe Recycling Sorting Plan of Alexandroupoli is a MRF plant that receives recyclables from the recycling scheme which has been developed in the cities of Komotini and Alexandroupoli. The scheme, which serves 100,273 residents, includes 1,405 blue bins for recyclable materials and 4 vehicles for the collection. The plant occupies an area of 1,740 m2 and has been in operation since June 2010. Main parts of the plant are the following:
In 2010 the plant operated 610 hours and recovered 1,407 tons of recyclable materials. About 30% of the recovered recyclables are reclaimed at local recycling companies whereas the rest are exported.
